[…] Annalaura di Luggo wandered through the city with the help of her scugnizzi — local street kids — collecting discarded materials to transform them into public sculptures. Filmmaker Bruno Colella followed this journey, creating a documentary that made it onto the Oscar longlist. Because this story is both hell and Eden. […] The creative process is captured inNapoli Eden, a documentary directed by Bruno Colella, with cinematography by Blasco Giurato and an original score by Eugenio Bennato. The film has won several international awards, including the Impact Docs Awards (California, 2020), the Hollywood Gold Awards, and the Age d'Or International Arthouse Film Festival. Just a few days ago, Napoli Eden entered the extended list of contenders for the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary. But this is more than just a documentary — it is a film born alongside the sculptures themselves, part of a unified aesthetic and ethical vision. “I was involved in every phase, every decision, every shot,” says the artist. The film begins with an autobiographical moment: a little girl rides a tricycle through a shipyard overlooking the Bay of Baia, gathering scraps from abandoned boats. She is a symbolic double of young Annalaura, who, even as an adult, has remained drawn to forgotten fragments and neglected beauty. This passion gave life to the 2019 project, which overcame mistrust, technical hurdles, and bureaucratic challenges to bring site-specific sculptures to life. The result is a film rich with poetic and civic meaning — a meditation on the theme of redemption: the redemption of a humble, shimmering material like aluminum; the redemption of a community through art; the redemption of a neighborhood too often associated with crime, now illuminated by creativity and hope.
